Two Wolves
One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.
He said, “My son, the battle is between two “wolves” inside us all.
One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.
The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?”

‘If there is a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is. And if that person has violated the law, the person will be taken care of.”

Philanthropy Article of the Week
Demonstrating Impact: Philanthropy’s Urgent Call to Action
The above blog entry, while falling into the bad happen of saying what should happen but not the how could it happen a very good primer for a larger discussion on how foundations impact should be judged. Today foundations are judged more on size, what issues they take on, or who their leader is than on what impact they are having.

Ramblings This Week
May 28, 2007 by ewj.
Well I have decided to do a major software upgrade went from pure free, shareware, and open source to Adobe Creative 3. This blog is now being updated with Adobe Contribute. It is a funky but functional program. I will report on how it is to use over time.
Philanthropy article of the week: Grantmaking with a Racial Equity Lens
- This PDF article is very helpful for foundation executives and grantees who interact with program officers of color to understand what stress this group of people are under along with helping all giving institutions thinks differently about giving to and within racial communities.
Software/Web Tech Item of the week: Scrib
- This is becoming my favorite way to send documents to multiple people. The program allows the documents to be read online, it will read it to you (yes, a decent voice reading), or you can download the document in a MS Word, Open Office, of PDF. The great thing is people can leave comments online for you to look at later. It even allows for powerpoint presentation and excel spreadsheets with graphs to be displayed.
Hardware Tech Item of week: Zen Stone
- It looks and feels like a pebble, but that name was already taken. This $50 mp3 player is a great gift for a child or adult music lover. I have a soft spot for the Zens but this one plays a variety of formats(mp3, wma, audible), comes is six colors, easy to get use to navigation, and 10 hours of music time before recharging.. It also works with Yahoo Music subscription service. The only downside is no native support for podcast. One gig, $50, 500 songs that is a pretty good combo platter.
Interesting Business Article of the week: Inclusivity is the New Imperialism
- Wow, I do not know what to say about this article except to say it reveals what may become the next big management scheme. It is a good solid article that anyone who wants to be a CEO should read.
Next week I will start a were am I game with pictures. If you want to find me now just check my twitter posts.
The lovely spouse is off with workmates on a Greek Island vacation and I miss her. This following is for her:
For one human being to love another that is perhaps the most difficult of our tasks; the ultimate, the last test and proof; the work for which all other work is but preparation.
~ Rainer Maria Rilke

Ramblings This Week
May 20, 2007 by ewj.
Well it is a while since I have written here but here are a few items that will become weekly (or every two-week items). These items will be of interest to others.
Philanthropy Item of the week: “Our Better Half” by Slate’s Henry Blodget
While this series is really just a bunch of articles to allow rich people to feel like they are on the cutting edge (or not) some snippets are very insightful. This article provides a few. Yes, it is few weeks old but after reading it, the story reflects my view that no matter how you make your money how and when you give it to others is truly your measure as a person.
Tech Item of the week: NetVibes
This is my current home page. I at times have kept Google (now iGoogle) as my home page on Firefox and MyYahoo on IE. Now I just use NetVibes. For those of you who are information hungry get NetVibes it will save you time by putting your favorite sites/rss feeds/ and blogs at your fingertips. It is also a good product if you have multiple machines so you can keep track of what you have read and what you have not.

Place of week: New York City
New York City because I am writing this from NYC. New York does have a lot to offer and it costs a lot to get what you need. I just downloaded the subway system into my Treo and will be off to Manhattan later today
